Name: Alimamy Sawaneh
From: Freetown, Sierra Leone
Position: Ebola Response 117 Operator.
Before Ebola I was in college and anticipating the upcoming school year. We were all confused when they announced the State of Emergency and no school. No school? What would l do with my time?
I was told by my sister about an opportunity to volunteer with the call center during the first lockdown in Sierra Leone which I did willingly. I consider it an honor to help serve my country. At first my parents were scared when I told them about the work I was doing but later they were happy when they realized the good work I am doing to combat Ebola.
The most difficult part of my work is hearing the voices of children helpless over the phone. I feel so sorry for them and I continue to think about them long after call but all I can do is pray for their wellbeing.
I dream of a better and prosperous Sierra Leone once we are Ebola free and my colleagues and I will go back to school. I feel more determined now more than ever to contribute to the development of our country. I dream that the young minds will take up the challenge.
I am an Ebola Hero because I am first responder on the frontline, phone line that is.
