Name: Susan W. Yamson
From: Freetown, Sierra Leone
Occupation: Ebola Response 117 Operator
Meet Susan, she would have graduated from High School this year and headed for college. But Ebola struck and all her plans were put on hold. Susan heard about an opportunity to work at the 117 Ebola Emergency Response and she pursued it. She felt she had a lot to give and wanted to learn and use the experience and skills gained post Ebola. Working at the center has been tough, getting calls from distraught family members desperate for help, everyone wants to be treated special and with so many calls coming in, she has to find a balance between empathy and urgency. Hearing the same stories day in and day out is draining, but she pushes on. Why? Because as young as she is Susan believes that life is about caring for not only yourself but for others. And that’s exactly what she is doing. Susan says she will not relent until Sierra Leoneans can once again embrace each other without fear.
